Hakuouki is an otome (girl’s side dating) game about the Shinsengumi made by Otomate (Idea Factory’s female-centric branch). You can read more about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinsengumi. It later had a pretty popular anime series based on it.
Basically, they were kinda the people to first do the “badass loner ronin” thing… And they’re really famous in Japan. They were against the influence America and the foreigners were having in Japan at the time and broke apart from the Emperor to form their own little group. Anyway, they’re really famous and each one of them is amazing.

To clear up everything…Kind of,
Shinsengumi was a real group of people.
The producers of this game used this nonfictional elements, added their own fictional bits (oni, etc.) to create this game.
“Hakuouki” is only the first of many other games in the same series/story.
All in all…The anime is based on the game, which is based on history plus a little fiction.

Believe it or not I’ve never seen the anime. I hear it’s pretty good, but I don’t do much anime stuff… Haven’t for several years anyway (since I started learning Japanese. Isn’t that weird?). Hehe. I got into this game when I saw the plot and I went “WAIT A SHINSENGUMI OTOME GAME WHAT?”
Any game where you can court Toshizou Hijikata and Okita Souji is good in my book. Been a Shinsengumi fan since I played a game that featured them years ago (Chaos Wars, actually… I liked the fact that it had Growlanser characters. Carmaine + Julia = Some of the coolest characters ever). Then I did some research on them and found out just how cool they were, etc, etc. I really want to play the Shinsengumi historical game series…. I wonder if anyone’s translated that yet? I’d sure like to if they haven’t…

Hopefully the current text reflects that they were real people… Do you think it doesn’t? If so, how would you fix it? I mean, I don’t want people to think that Idea Factory created the Shinsengumi or anything… Although that’s kinda a funny concept and one could easily write an AWFUL fanfic involving time travel and a magic paintbrush or something… Well that’s beside the point. Anyway, I’ve rambled enough. What’re your thoughts?
