Been a couple weeks. Been translating mostly on the weekends since I have SO much homework. Got a lot of the tougher sentences done today, actually. So from now on should be (relatively) smooth sailing since I’m FINALLY done that bear of an character-introductory phase x.x. What this means to you is that my next patch will, realistically, come in a month or two from today like I said in my interview.
Really, the main reason I updated was because I want people to like me on facebook… Not gonna lie lol.
Also, I will be in contact with the upcoming translators of Saga 3 (Crimson Noctural) for a possible collaboration project. Since that was my first RPG-game-thingy EVER (from my AWESOME Aunt [well, before she went crazy] who never got me stereotypical toys or anything), I really want to play the remake x.x. I mean, I’ll do so ANYWAY in Japanese, but if I can have a hand in the translation, it’d add variety and stuff to my translation work (which could actually help Hakuouki out since I sometimes go “BLEH” from burnout).
…And Okita-san is totally awesome <3.

Maybe try taking a break from so much publicity? I’d wait until getting more progress before anymore publicity, it gives off a bad vibe that you’re doing this for the wrong reasons, especially for attention.
Well, I’m doing it for several reasons. The number one, one is for me. To know that I can do it in the first place. It’s a personal thing for me. Number two is the fans. Publicity isn’t really in there.
Publicity isn’t TOO important to me, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy getting it. Honestly, I post stuff like this to give me an emotional boost so I can work harder <3. It's one of my cures for burnout. Seeing people backing me up inspires me to work longer into the night looking up arcane kanji that went out of fashion during the Meiji era…. lol. And stupid, stupid, undocumented colloquialisms that I have to get by context by googling and looking to see how natives use them… x.x. Those are my arch nemesis!
Also, though publicity is not important to me or my project, it *IS* important for my future as a fan translator. I would like Nimue Translations to become sort of a bigger name in the community than it is, so, when I have some free time and I'm not translating, I like to promote it in any way I can. Take for instance the facebook group – I was looking at Crimson Nocturnal and noticed they had one, so I figured I would as well ^^.
I got in touch with them and have sent them an offer on a collaboration work, so if that goes through, I will be looking for recruiting some translators! That's the other reason I posted. So that when I asked for translators it wouldn't be a COMPLETE surprise. Here's hoping the collaboration works out! *crosses fingers*
Actually… To be entirely honest, I hate leaving my blog for like three weeks without an update. I don't want people thinking I'm dead x.x. That also spurned this little mini-update.
*pats Phoenix Goddess* Don't be so cynical dear ^^. I see where you're coming from, but trust me – fans come before publicity in my mind (though I come before fans… If that makes sense).
(Also, I like getting people pumped for an up-coming release. My next patch is coming right up! ^^)
Not enough people who speak languages besides japanese know about the Hakuouki series. In a way, Nimue is bringing forth new fans for Otomate by translating this. The more likes, the more fans, the more translated.
I’m not sure you know the world of translating/romhacking very well, Pluupy. It’s not about people bringing you a translation, it’s HOW they bring it that will get it well known.
You get more fans, not by publicity, but doing the best you can. All you really need is one site, but flashing that you’re a translator everywhere will get you known, but not in a good way at all.
Trust me, when you make a site, that’s all you need. Publicity may be good, but you don’t want to come off as a fame-seeker, which is kind of the vibe some romhackers are getting when they come here(Not just me).
People will know who you are by your hard work, not public displays. Just give them screenshots and make a page for what you have left to do, then cross out or take it off the list when you’re done. Many people know of my group’s projects, not because we flashed it around, but because of our hard work and updates.
I have no doubt in my mind that you feel bad about not doing many updates, but if you do your best, the updates will happen on their own. When you feel burnt out, go take a break, even a little translating a day or every weekend can bring you a long way if you actually love your project and doing it for your fans.
…obviously you guys didn’t get what I said. Oh well i’ll just leave this here and be on my way…
I do appreciate your efforts to bring Hakuouki to those people who don`t understand.
But I can`t help but feel that you`re doing it for the wrong reasons. I don`t know what`s going on in your head, no one except you does, but I can certainly tell you what`s going on in my head whenever I read your “updates”.
You contradict yourself. You say that publicity isn`t important to you, just that it`s important to YOUR future and that you want the name “Nimue Translations” to be known, and that name is your name. You say that you like to “promote it any way you can”, isn`t that the very definition of publicity? Please don`t pretend that the attention isn`t important to you, your twitter, your facebook page, your forum, your wordpress homepage, and your wordpress for Hakuouki says otherwise. I know that the attention can provide a good motivation, but if you can`t bring yourself to work on a project without the attention, then you shouldn`t be working on a project in the first place.
I also understand the feeling of wanting to be appreciated for your hard work, but I think you`re going about it in the wrong way. Your “fanbase” will create itself, when people see all the effort that you are putting into the actual translation. You get more non-Japanese speaking fans by bringing out a translated game, or at least translated screenshots, and letting the people decide for themselves if they will like the game or not based on your work, not by bombarding them with a name. I`m not sure how other people think, but yes, when I see a name of a seiyuu, writer or artist that I like, I am more inclined to check out their things, but in the end, I decide whether I like something or not based on substance, and not purely based on the name attached to it. Hoping that fans, who don`t like a certain game, will still support that certain game`s project just becaue your name is there is naïve.
And Pluupy, there is never “not enough people” who don`t know about a game. As a translator myself, if you yourself have the will, and there is at least one person who wants to play the game, then that should be enough for you to translate it. I despise this way of thinking, where translating games with more fans = more attention for you.

Crimson Nocturnal and other groups have facebook pages, I mean… Why the drama over this? I meant nothing by it, I just thought it would be cool.
And frankly, I like making an update every couple weeks, regardless of how much I have to say. Too many projects go months or years without updates and no one knows if they’re even being worked on anymore. Look at Phantasian Productions and how often they update. That drives me mad. So, rather than just say “I’m still working on it” like I have in the last couple posts, I made a facebook as well. Crimson Nocturnal had one, so I figured I might as well too. I thought it’d be fun. I’m not planning some global advertising campaign or anything, okay? I just… Thought it’d be fun and would give me something more to say than “I’M WORKING” since those updates seem empty. It took me four seconds and was meant as a silly little extra thing.
Also, for the record, I started this project way before I made a twitter or a facebook or anything. Btw, I made the twitter for transparency. I want people to know that yes, I’m working. Maybe help me if there’s an icky sentence that I post or something. I don’t know.
Please, I enjoy the publicity, but I’d do the project without it in a heartbeat (and did so for quite awhile, mind you), so do not think that way. This is a lot of work on my end and I’m sorry something as innocent as a facebook page became a topic of debate. I do understand where you are coming from, but please also understand that drama and misunderstandings have ended translations before. So I’m asking you to trust that I’m not doing this for the publicity and my updates are just to give my fans more transparency and let them know Hakuouki isn’t abandoned. Lots of translators don’t do that and I, personally, wish they did. If people would prefer I only update with more major news, they can reply to this and tell me and I’ll only update when there’s something worth saying.
A lot of what I do is driven by the fact that I hate when translators drop off the face of the earth and go months and (sometimes) years without an update. I realise that you are aggravated and I understand where you are coming from, but please understand that I made the group for fun, not as a ploy.
I mean no hard feelings, so I hope I didn’t sound argumentative or anything ^^. I just take how others see me pretty seriously and… I don’t like being seen as someone who’s doing this for the publicity. Because that’s not true at all. I’ve been stressed to my stomach since Phoenix’s comment over this and I may have come off as harsher than I needed to because of that, so… Please forgive any tone. I appreciate your support of my project and your input as to translation work. Please forgive any misunderstandings on both sides, and let’s both work hard on our own individual projects <3.
I honestly don’t know why you feel as if we’re attacking you over a Facebook. I believe I was pretty nice about it, even though I was being honest, I was nicer than I am with actual fame seeking translators. I just don’t think a person needs that much publicity, think about it, it’s a looooot more than just a wordpress and a Facebook. Count the sites you’re using just to get the word out. It was in your interview that you said how much you love the publicity. It gave off the vibe that you were doing all of this for the wrong reasons.
I don’t think what you said was harsh, I didn’t feel upset about it, so you shouldn’t either. We didn’t come here to attack you, we just wanted to make sure you knew the difference between seeking fame and spreading the love of translations. The publicity gives you a pretty bad vibe, but the admitting it is what really does the damage. Take pride in making people smile, not pride in publicity.

Thanks! But they do have a point, even if they were a little overly harsh. I did sort of come off as if I was obsessed about sspreading the word, when I really just spent five minutes now and again.

I’m not quite sure I understand what you mean. We still offer her help should she need it and she offered her help to us should we need it, that’s better terms than a lot of clashing romhackers. As I said, we weren’t trying to attack her, just trying to watch out for her reputation, especially as a solo translator. If she wants to help with SaGa, she’ll have to be doing it for the right reasons.
Actually, why I want to help with SaGa 3 was the same reason I wanted to do SaGa 2 before I found out it was being done.
It’s easy, relaxing, simple Japanese and… Most importantly it’s a BIG part of my youth. I mean, I played SaGa 3 before I even played Pokemon Red! So that’s the main reason I want to do it. I got SaGa 2 (then called ‘Final Fantasy Legend II’) years later and loved it too <333. However, the whole reason I started my own translation group was so I could have some more control over it, so I'd like to work alongside Crimson Nocturnal rather than being a member of it. If that makes sense.
I'm a big nostalgia freak hehe. I constantly search for like… "Doug" and "The Brave Little Toaster" on YouTube. So I mean, it'd mean a lot to me to work on the remake of a game that meant a lot to me as a kid. I might do it myself, independent of them, if they are not willing to work together.. Because, well, yeah. It was a big part of my youth x.x. I can STILL hum the Talon theme lol.

I personally think that EVEN IF nimue is plotting something to a publicity of the nimue translation blah blah blah and to get more fame and was motivated for fame and honor blah blah blah….

Nimue wants to be respected, that’s her motive for the publicity, to be respected and known. If she wants to do it the right way, seeking fame IS NOT the way to go. Do you know anything about the romhacking/translation scenes? If not, please, by all means, do some damn research.
No one asked Nimue to stop, at all, so that input of yours was quite moot. NO ONE HERE HAS A PROBLEM, we were asking her if the fans were the real reason and how fame seeking would make her have a bad reputation in the romhacking/translation community. Telling her this is helping her out quite a bit in the long run, because all of the fame seekers in the past were NOT respected and had more trouble than they did glory. Why would we want that to happen to her? Hmm? Do you have an answer? Nimue herself said I was respectful, so there was really no point in adding fuel to a fire that was already dying.
I appreciate all the input from everyone’s sides. I am humbled by how loyal my fans are (and how willing to fight for me <3), and honoured that you and Inori took the time to point out the flaws in my actions. These are not empty words and I do mean them.
Criticism is a difficult pill to take, but as long as it's constructive, which yours and Inori's was, it ought to be taken… Even if it's a bit sour going down.

Ummm…this may be a bad idea but I kind of want to put my input on the publicity thingy…I know it’s a done and dead issue now but I feel kind of suffocated without saying my opinions.
I co-managed a scanlation group a while ago, which is dead by now (lol) and it was a huge learning experience. One thing I learned is that publicity really does matter. First of all, it’s really sad when you release updates and then everybody just leeches without commenting. This is due to the internet, I suppose, where people can come anonymously and just snag stuff. In real life, you really can’t just go up to a person, take something from them, and then leave, right? (Unless you have bad manners,
)
Having more people acknowledge your work also acts like a barrier that keeps you from quitting. I’m fairly sure that Nimue is better at me with slacking and laziness but when there’s a lot of people awaiting your releases and they just eat up even just progress reports, you know that you have loyal fans who care about the project. It’s like when I check my blog and see that I’ve gotten 204 hits in one day, even when I haven’t updated for a week and my blog is just average; the feeling that somebody cares just really makes your day.
I’m also just adding that there are people on the staff and people who hang around the forums that will tell Nimue if she’s overdoing the publicity. I *personally* think that spreading the word can only do good right now; I’m sure there are a lot of otome game lovers that can’t read or speak Japanese that would love to be able to enjoy a game or two.
And yes, Okita is awesome. He’s winning the popularity poll on my blog with 8 votes more than Hijikata, who’s in second place….and is it just me or does he seem like a cat person. Besides the drama CD.
